The Singapore World Expo 2010

This isn't what I usually like to archive at the Parlor, but I don't really have a place currently to put things Futuristic (unless it's a Steampunk future). But here we go!

Courtesy of Pop Sci latest gallery, seeing the various World Pavilions of 2010 is a treat! Lots of recycled materials, natural materials, and innovative energy use:

Britain's Seed Cathedral is utterly fantastic (I still have to check out the interior!)

Spain's pavilion is another one of those that becomes a whole new entity at NIght. Many of the buildings that look ho hum in the daylight really reveal some Cinderella beauty come nightfall. Awesome!

I'm afraid when it comes to futuristic design, Germany's building rather falls within my taste (I wonder what that says about me :O). From this angle, I like, but from other views, who knows? Elegance of line and shapes. Rather classic I guess, and not super imaginative, but so very pleasing all the same.

I saw the pic for the USA pavilion and would like to forget it completely. Good grief people. *_* It was like looking at something that put on a lounge suit and still couldn't pretend it was hot.

Check out the Pop Sci link for more. What they didn't include, to my surprise, was more detailed info about the Shanghai Pavilion, or Dream Cube Pavilion. Pics following are courtesy of Inhabitat, which has great articles about this really wonderful building, made of recycled cd cases(!!):

This is the artist representation. If you look at the Inhabitat link, you'll see the finished result, and Interactive Lit Up Building. The interior rooms are also interactive via light displays:

And the best part is the secret interior, where all observers and visitors, via group led action, can affect the way the building lights up by their very own movements:

A building that responds when all within work together. That's a rather wondrous thing, don't you think? :)

Botanical artwork is absolutely beautiful, I especially love the precision of the visual observations within the 'casual' placement of a sketchbook. Seeing people's handwritten notes is rather thrilling. :D These I like; when it's anatomical/dissection drawings however, then I'm quite squeamish.

This car really is Fascinating! I think this is the best angle, because that strange, basket 'trunk' in the back? Not so sexy. Nor is the safety bumper in front, which starts to resemble dental wire work the more I look at it. But as a whole, the Fascination car looks like a cute fish, so I like it. ;)

Utterly surreal, totally German Expressionist with a just a dash of that 'nude descending a staircase' imagery. You can watch it without the sound, and probably with no need for recalling Exactly the plot of the House of Usher (unless you'd like to!).

I look at this and just enjoy the Pure Artistry of it. Hope you do too. :)

Magicpedia is like Wikipedia for magicians and is provided courtesy of Genii Magazine. I really like 'golden age' magic, the mystery performer era of a century ago where magic was done with secret, forgotten machines and demonstrations of remarkable automata. This has a great repository of history (not of secrets, sorry!), and also video demos by magicians to view.

Another good resource is http://www.mylovelyassistant.com/ which is where tricks you might be considering are reviewed. If there are several levitation secrets you're contemplating for your repertoire, this might help narrow down your choices. ;)

I am not a practicing illusionist; characters in my Young Adults novel (fantasy/adventure! Being readied for publishing later this year) are, so I've been doing quite a bit of research. And frankly, because I work in animation I'm a bit of a 'method actor'; I need to know how it feels, thus, to the Magic Store!

I've yet to perform any trick competently (there are lots of OOPS involved where I'm concerned), but it's fun!!! :D

And as much as I want to, the answer is no, ;) I have not bought any Fire magic.

I'm enjoying the William Blake online exhibit Very Much. High quality scans and you can, unlike in a physical museum, get as 'close' as possible to the work. No security host hovering, no velvet ropes, bullet proof archival glass, and no need for a hand telescope (lol, yes, I've been known to use one. ;) ). It still doesn't replace the experience of seeing these pieces For Real, but still a great substitute, all the same. Check it out! There's even Babar. :D
